Osteopathy for Postural Complaints Surrey

Many of us have been concerned about our posture from time to time. We caught ourselves in the mirror or had comments from friends drawing attention to our posture. Perhaps it was the rounded elevated shoulders, the slumped posture or a forward head position? It was possibly a swayback, scoliosis, or just the difficulty in standing or sitting upright due to stiff achy muscles or pain.

Poor posture can affect how we feel about ourselves, cause internal organs to be compressed or affect their motility and create compensatory patterns with our biomechanics, such as leading to some muscles shortening and others being put under stretch and feeling tight. None of this enables our body to work as efficiently as possible, despite it being amazing at adjusting and aiming for balance.

However, while we focus more on our posture first, our ability to move and perform daily activities with ease or perform to our highest level when doing sport is arguably more important, and our posture can often impact movement.

At Arc Osteopathy, we will target shortened muscles to increase their length and focus on strengthening, lengthening and weaker muscles while ensuring you can balance and stabilise your body through a range of movement and activities with muscle fibre firing patterns.

So, having optimal movement and function will enable us to enjoy our favourite leisure activities and sports to a higher level and for you to be able to continue performing your activities for daily living.

Approaches to treating postural movement complaints

Our osteopaths will assess your posture, muscle engagement and movement patterns to produce a treatment plan to enable you to move with more freedom and confidence, with less effort and less pain/stiffness.

Treatment will consist of hands-on osteopathic treatment, combined with lifestyle advice to include working posture and desk or driving set up as well as exercises to help increase mobility, improve posture and strength, and reduce stiffness and pain.

At Arc osteopathy, your first appointment will be to establish the cause of your pain and stiffness through a consultation and examination. We then provide a treatment and rehab program for you.

Below you’ll find an example of a Posture correction exercise. Our patients are given access to our patient video library with specific exercises videos to aid their recovery.
